The mastermind behind the most powerful picture of the 2018 World Cup

It’s 2:00 am in Moscow, and Rodrigo Villalba is in his hotel room doing some work on his day off. He’s Brazilian, and I’m Colombian, so it makes sense that we communicate in Portuñol (a mix of Portuguese and Spanish). So far, we’ve managed to understand each other pretty well. Before discussing the picture in question, I wanted to know a little bit about him. Rodrigo is a 41 year-old a photo-journalist from Campiñas, state of Sao Paulo in Brazil. He and his wife Valeria own an agency called Memory Press. He also works as a freelancer for Futebol Interior, one of the biggest soccer web portals in his native Brazil. We haven’t met in person but he seems like a simple man and really down-to-earth. In his free time, Rodrigo loves to ride his motorcycle with his wife and go on walks with his two German Shepherds, Sauron and Hanna…

There are many firsts when it comes to football. Your first football cleats, your first football shirt, your first goal, your first professional game you attend, and of course, your first major international tournament!

My first pair of cleats were the Quasars as worn by Gary Linekar, my first football shirt was an Arsenal home shit with JVC on the front, my first professional game was Queens Park Rangers versus Southampton at Loftus Road, and my first major international tournament was the 1998 France World Cup. France 98 was also the first time I bought a shirt with a name and number on it - the infamous yellow and green Ronaldo 9 Brazil home shirt, which now sits in a frame signed by the king himself...

Es martes 26 de Julio, 2016 y el reloj marca las 2:20 pm. Me encuentro en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami, en la sala de abordaje para el vuelo 31 de Avianca, con destino a la ciudad de Medellín. Debo confesar que estoy un poco nervioso y me cuesta concentrarme; a lo mejor fue por eso que el perro del guardia de la línea de seguridad me miró rayado y se tomó un par de minutos más para olerme...
